Power-system modelling partner to ET Fuels.
We are doing all of the PSCAD and PowerFactory work for ET Fuels’ first-mover e-methanol project on the US Gulf Coast, which also includes an eSAF (methanol-to-jet) route. The project is in FEED.

What we do on the project.
- 01
PSCAD and PowerFactory models
Models of the co-located renewables, the electrolyser loads, the balance of plant and the synthesis plant’s electrical systems.
- 02
EMT and RMS studies
EMT for converter interaction, weak-grid performance, control-mode stability and transients. RMS for steady state and contingencies.
- 03
Grid integration and compliance
Grid code, harmonics, FRT, protection coordination and reactive power planning, updated as the connection design changes.
- 04
Input to FEED
Power-system input to converter selection, connection layout and risk reviews during front-end design.
Why the electrical design is hard.
Very large loads that ramp fast
Electrolyser demand can change quickly, so voltage control and protection have to keep up.
Wind and solar on site
On-site generation varies through the day, so the plant runs across many operating points.
Weak-grid and islanded modes
Some operating modes have little or no grid support, which is where converter controls are tested hardest.
Many converters close together
Converters can interact with each other and the network, and harmonic limits tighten as their share grows.
Other Power-to-X projects.
These are independent projects, not Velon work. They face the same electrical questions.
Djewels
20 MW green hydrogen project with FID taken, using alkaline electrolysers from John Cockerill.
MadoquaPower2X
Wind, solar and electrolysis in one complex, producing green ammonia and methanol.
European Energy
Commercial e-methanol plant supplying shipping and chemical buyers.
